Morning routine for moms, and kids!
Whether you go to work, work from home, or stay at home with your kids, having a morning routine is crucial to a successful day. I wrote a post about why to wake up early, but I wanted to go a little deeper than that.
I hope this morning routine for moms will help your mornings be a little less chaotic!
The Miracle Morning
I recently read “The Miracle Morning,” and if you haven’t read it, I highly suggest it. I am also currently reading The Miracle Morning for parents and families. By the way, both of these are on Kindle Unlimited; you can get 30 days free here.
I am not following the miracle morning 100%, but I have adapted it to work for my needs, and it has helped tremendously. Here are five things to do in the morning for a more productive day.
1. Set yourself up for success the night before
If you’re not a morning person, it might be best to do as much as you can the night before. This can mean getting your “to do” list ready, laying out clothes, packing lunches, or anything that will make your morning easier.
When my kids were going to school I tried to get lunches packed the night before, clothes set out, and backpacks ready to go. I also put all of my husband’s stuff together to make it easier for him, because he left around 3 AM. My kids are all home during the day now, and my husband doesn’t get up quite as early (he doesn’t go to work until the late time of 5 AM these days) so getting ready for the morning doesn’t require as much work.
2. Wake up earlier than your kids
Yes, I know. If this is something that you aren’t doing, you probably don’t want someone telling you to do it. Using your kids as an alarm clock does work, but I was always so tired and stressed in the mornings when my son work up before me (this was before the other two kids being born.) Let me tell you a secret; I haven’t always been a “morning person.” At around 19 years old, I made up an elaborate story about how bad traffic was so that I could come into work at 8:30 AM instead of 8:00. Yes, traffic was just as bad at 8:30, but it worked!
Everything changed when I had my oldest. He has always woke up pretty early. When you let the kids be an alarm clock, mornings can be chaotic. I find that having an hour (or two, or more) before the kids wake up lets me get a lot done. Right now we live far away from family, my husband works long hours during the week, and the kids are homeschooled. If I want quiet, I have to wake up early.
3. Exercise in the morning
Exercising for just a few minutes can give you energy and help you wake up. I don’t recommend a 60 minute Zumba session (unless you’re up for that.) Doing a 10-minute morning yoga routine can do the trick. If exercising in the morning sounds awful, or you just don’t have time, try to fit it in later in the day. Exercise is critical to your health and well being. Schedule some yoga, resistance exercises (these resistance bands are cheap, portable and provide a good workout at home with no weights!) or a walk in your daily planner.
4. Have a solid morning routine for yourself
The first thing that I do in the morning is to get out of bed. It seems obvious, but the longer you stay in bed, the more likely you will be to keep procrastinating. Doing something semi-active like washing your face, brushing your teeth or changing laundry from the washer to the dryer can help you wake up a little bit. I always make my bed, drink some water and make coffee. I currently don’t set the alarm, I’ve been waking up when my husband goes to work.
In The Miracle Morning, there is an acronym called “SAVERS.” It stands for silence, affirmations, visualization, exercise, reading, and scribing (writing.) I haven’t gotten to the point yet where I am doing all of these things, yet. I have started my days with 5-minute meditations. You can use an app like Calm or find free meditations on YouTube. I find that meditating for a few minutes helps me focus before the day begins. I’m not a “meditation” person either, so I suggest you try it before dismissing it.
Planning the day
At this point, I sit down with my Day Tracker and a notebook that I use for the kid’s homeschool plan. I plan to start getting things set up for homeschooling a week in advance, but I’m not there yet. This time is used to prepare for the rest of my day. I use different colored pens (these pens, they are erasable!) for various items, kids, home, personal, work, blog, etc.

5. Have a solid morning routine for the kids
In addition to having a good routine for yourself, you should set up a good routine for the kids too. When my kids were going to school, I would set out their clothes the night before. Now that they are homeschooled I don’t worry about it as much. We typically don’t go anywhere in the morning.
No matter what your morning routine is just trying to be consistent. Making a list and putting it on the wall can be helpful. Let the kids be part of the process by helping to choose their clothes the night before. They could also get their backpacks ready or help prepare breakfast in the morning.
If your kids are younger or if they are home during the day, make sure they have clear expectations about their chores or whatever else they need to do during the day. Visual kids will appreciate having a checklist.
